Peer Review Process
Manuscripts submitted to LHR are first considered by the editor, “in-house,? to establish whether or not they meet threshold criteria of "appropriateness for review"—(1) basic quality and (2) general relevance to the defined purposes of the journal. Manuscripts that are obviously not appropriate for our consideration will be rejected at this point. Under most circumstances this determination can be made within 1-3 weeks of receipt of a manuscript. This process has been designed to minimize authors’ inconvenience. Manuscripts that the editor deems appropriate for review are sent to multiple referees. All referees are chosen by the editor, who also makes all decisions on manuscripts submitted. Our invariable practice is double-blind peer review—the editor is the only person who knows the identity of both authors and referees. The editorial staff does go to some lengths to render submissions anonymous, although we will not delete self-reference in notes. All referee reports are anonymous, although some referees will indicate a willingness or preference to have their identity made known to the author. Under normal circumstances, referee reports are obtained and returned to authors, accompanied by a preliminary editorial determination, within 10-14 weeks of receiving the manuscript.
